James Klebau’s photography, Larry Ogan’s Southwest landscapes, and Paula Wenzl Bellacera's prolific oil paintings: “Fiesta For The Eyes” James Klebau’s photography is often described as mysterious, beautiful and timeless. Larry Ogan’s Southwest landscapes are bold, crisp depictions of the environs of New Mexico; sharply- focused, tightly cropped, expressing the stark, arid landscapes with emotion and clarity. Paula Wenzl Bellacera, a part- time Santa Fean and prolific oil painter, expresses her love of cacti and her cacti garden at her studio in her recent works. |

Threads of Devotion: The Wardrobe of La Conquistadora This lavish exhibit is more than mere clothing and jewels of a local religious icon, but rather a fascinating depiction of colonial, frontier, and modern life. The personal stories of the donors of these items encapsulate the changing times and fashions of the centuries; communal capes, military uniforms, and re-fashioned bridal gowns provide rare glimpses of New Mexican life--everything from the heart transplant survivor making a gown in thanksgiving to La Conquistadora, to actress Ali MacGraw's donation of regal finery. The stunning crowns, Byzantine crosses, necklaces from old mining camps, scepters, and other accessories cast a timeless spell of days gone by, portraying the struggle of faith in the New World, the syncretism of cultures, and the drama and pageantry of the American Southwest. |

PATRICK McFARLIN- Obituaries and Masterpieces Each September, Art in America publishes an “Annual Guide” that includes obituaries of the art world’s most celebrated artists, critics, and curators who passed away that year. Included in each obituary is a drawn likeness of the deceased, a very brief list of career highlights, and the age of death. Patrick McFarlin’s Obituary Drawings, included in his September solo exhibition at LAUNCHPROJECTS, reconstruct obituaries line-by-line, often with McFarlin’s personal thoughts and commentaries on the side. A meditation on time’s fleeting nature and the inevitable impact of death (at any age) on a career in art, the Obituary Drawings are a testament to the greatness of the deceased and an insistent reminder of our own mortality. In McFarlin’s words, “this practice slowed me down and sobered me up.” |
