Two California painters take a new direction

LODI • Knowlton Gallery presents recent works by Peggi Kroll-Roberts and Ann McMillan this month. Kroll-Roberts is best known for her beach scenes, which often feature abstract figures of women and children. But this presentation also includes paintings reflecting a new direction—figures set amid interiors. “I want to move away from my beach scenes,” Kroll-Roberts says. “I’m interested in Sorolla-esque portraits that are more about dress or the interior than the figure in it.” In McMillan’s recent paintings, there’s a concentration on palette knife and daub works. “My daub work comes out of trying to understand Monet’s paintings,” McMillan explains. “These paintings take a long time. You have to mix up each color, and each daub has to be clean, but the result creates an amazing spontaneity.” The show runs through February 27.
